FoCo Technique™ is an original and evolving dance vocabulary developed by choreographer and artistic director of YYDC, Yue Yin. Echoing her choreographic voice, FoCo Technique™ is a unique contemporary form of dance movement rooted in Chinese classical and folk dance melded with the complex and diverse experiences of the immigrant experience. The form grows from Yin's own blended international background and a deep appreciation for precision, contrast, fluidity, and musicality.
FoCo Technique™ teaching is conducted in a follow-long method and the movement is closely aligned with the music. The instructor demonstrates sequences of movement based on the principles of FoCo while following a three-stage structure:
Activating - establishing the connections between mind and body,
Rooting - finding footing and building grounded awareness
Mapping - understanding the transitions and pathways of movement phrases.
ABOUT THE TEACHER:
Nat Wilson (they/he) is one of only two dancers certified to teach FoCo Technique™, and they bring to the technique the passionate physicality and honesty they developed previously in their career, most notably while dancing with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and ate9 Dance Company. Their teaching style is as rigorous as it is encouraging, with a focus on empowering participants to break the barriers between themselves and the dancers they wish to be.
Nat Wilson (they/he) is a Brooklyn-based freelance dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Their main work is with YYDC, performing with the company in New York and internationally, and assisting Yue Yin in staging repertory and creating new work. They are in the first generation of certified FoCo instructors, and have already led FoCo workshops in Peru in addition to ongoing classes in New York. Their other freelance work includes kNoname Artist/Roderick George, Boca Tuya, ate9 Dance Company, and More Fish Dance. Before moving to Brooklyn, Nat worked abroad dancing with Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, where they had the opportunity to perform and teach masterclasses around the world, including China, Colombia, South Korea, and India.
