Mission

SGLA is a community arts space where people gather and create
It exists to inspire, to provide a sense of belonging, and to form community through the arts

Vision

  • Support people in sharing their artistic work and be a champion for their vision
  • Be an uncurated space for people to rent at accessible rates for classes, filming, performances, pop-ups, etc.
  • Provide a space where you are welcomed, considered, and cared for - you are always on brand
  • Build community through shared creative experiences
  • Celebrate the arts as multi-generational, multi-cultural, and diverse in its expression and storytelling.
  • Produce free and low cost events to engage with the surrounding neighborhood and uplift the unique artistic voices of L.A.

History

SGLA was founded by Kate Hutter Mason after incubating the idea for 10 years during her tenure as the Artistic Director of L.A. Contemporary Dance Company. She purchased the property in 2019 and renovated it for its grand opening in March 2020 - unfortunately at the same time as the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Not knowing exactly what the long term impact would be on live performance, SGLA began by connecting people virtually before shifting to in-person rentals for zoom classes and small film projects.

By 2022, the space was able to host performances, rehearsals, workshops, classes, and open-air markets.  Today, we continue to expand what is possible to see and experience at the space thanks to the incredible community of movers and shakers who choose SGLA as their creative home, and the public who come here to gather and create.
